Bread Baker and Stone Miller
About Mountain Oven
Mountain Oven is a craft wholesale bakery & stone milling operation. We mill a diverse array of local whole grain and sifted flours in-house. We balance a wholesale production (baking 4-5 days/week at 200-350kg/day) with a weekly community focused pop-up, summer farmers markets, and a creative, seasonally-driven specials program.
We are located in Paonia - a cozy, rural community on the Western Slope of Colorado. To support your move, independent housing is available and may be negotiated as part of your compensation package.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced baker to join our bread program and our milling operations. This is a hands-on role in a team environment that requires a strong work ethic, a deep understanding of sourdough, and the unique characteristics of fresh-milled grain.
Key Responsibilities:
Production: Mixing, shaping, and baking for a variety of products, including hearth loaves (baked in a deck oven), pan breads (baked in a rack oven), challah, bagels, & seasonal specials.
Stone Milling: Manage the production of whole grain and sifted flours; perform regular cleaning and maintenance of milling equipment.
Formula Management: Adjust formulas for changing flour variables, and develop seasonal specials.
Communication & Collaboration: Work closely with fellow bakers, our pastry team, and management to ensure consistency & efficiency across the production. We are serious about our craft and also value a positive, relaxed environment where we enjoy our work, each other, and the food we make.
What You Bring
Sourdough Experience: 2+ years of professional bread experience with a focus on naturally leavened processes.
Grain Knowledge: Experience (or a desire to learn) stone milling and working with fresh-milled flour.
Leadership: Strong communication skills and the ability to mentor other bakers and collaborate on production flow.
Attention to Detail: Fresh-milled sourdough involves many variables. We’re looking for someone who enjoys adjusting details with the seasons, and embraces a culture of continuous improvement.
Compensation
Wage: $20+/hr (Dependent on Experience) + Tip Share.
Work-Life Balance: 4-day work week; no overnight shifts.
Benefits: Healthcare assistance (with tenure), free bread, shift meals/drinks, and bakery discounts.
Baker Assist
Now hiring an aspiring baker to join our bread and pastry team - an opportunity to get kitchen experience, learn about the craft, work on a team, and help make beautiful baked goods. Shifts involve supporting your team through the process of scratch baking: mixing, shaping, baking, finishing pastries, doing dishes and cleaning work spaces, packaging and sorting bread and pastry for wholesale orders, customer service, and helping where needed as a supporting role on the team.
Here are some things we are looking for in an ideal candidate:
Kitchen experience is appreciated but not required
Attention to detail and focused diligent work ethic
Communication skills and ability to take direction from department leads
Ability to read and execute recipes with accuracy
Ability to perform physical work, be on foot, and lift 50lbs
Provide excellent customer service and enjoy connecting with customers
Desire to learn, work with your hands, and be a team player
Compensation
Wage: $17+/hr (Dependent on Experience) + Tip Share.
Work-Life Balance: 4-day work week; no overnight shifts.
Benefits: Healthcare assistance (with tenure), free bread, shift meals/drinks, and bakery discounts.
What we’re looking for in our team
We love to connect with others who share a love for this line of work whether it is related to sourdough, milling, baking of any kind, bread, pastry, sales, delivery driving, or generally being in a commercial kitchen.
Our company is readily evolving and so are our staffing needs. Between expanding our milling operation and opening up more wholesale routes, we are glad to get to know folks interested in being a part of our team to help realize our vision and goals.
We care deeply about what we do. We want folks to join us in it who bring with them a care for community, local food, and quality. A love for learning is appreciated; demonstrated passion for craft baking a plus. All in all, that’s what we’re going for at Mountain Oven.
Whether or not we are actively hiring, we are glad to connect with experienced kitchen, bakery, delivery, management, and sales professionals on an on going basis. If you’re interested in working with us - send us an intro and resume. The timing might just be perfect or perhaps we can look out into the future together.
